A Son’s Journey at Tina Upholstery
By Andrew Richards,
When I think back to my childhood, the memory of my father, David John Richards, is one of hard work, sacrifice, and love. He wasn’t just a father, but a man who poured everything he had into his craft. Tina Upholstery, the business he founded in 1980, was more than just a livelihood—it was a legacy, a reflection of the values he lived by. When he named the business after my sister, Tina, it wasn’t just to honour her, but also to ensure that our family’s name was tied to something meaningful and lasting.
Learning from a Master
Growing up, I was surrounded by fabric, tools, and furniture that most kids my age didn’t give a second thought to. But to my father, each of these things mattered. I watched him work tirelessly, paying attention to every detail and treating every project as if it were his most important one. Whether it was restoring an old chair or crafting a bespoke sofa, my dad made it clear that quality and care came first.
What people don’t often know is the story behind his work ethic. My father grew up in Wales, without his parents to guide him. Losing them at a young age meant he had to grow up quickly, learning to fend for himself in a world that wasn’t always kind. Then came the war, which took him far from the only home he’d ever known. It wasn’t just the physical challenges of war that shaped him, but the mental and emotional resilience he developed along the way.
After the war, he made the brave decision to start over in Australia, leaving behind everything familiar. Coming here with no family and no safety net, he built Tina Upholstery from the ground up. It wasn’t easy, but if there’s one thing my father knew how to do, it was to endure, no matter the obstacles.
Taking Over the Family Business
When Dad retired in 2018, he passed the business down to me. That day felt heavy. It wasn’t just about taking over a company, but about carrying forward everything my father had built: his dedication, his love for craftsmanship, and his legacy. I had big shoes to fill, and I knew it. But I also knew that I’d been preparing for this moment my entire life.
Dad had always made sure I understood the value of hard work, and he never sugar-coated the struggles he’d faced. He told me about the times when he wasn’t sure Tina Upholstery would survive, the moments when money was tight, and the sleepless nights spent worrying about whether the business could sustain itself. But he also shared the joy of seeing a customer’s face light up when they saw the finished product, or the satisfaction of restoring a piece of furniture that seemed beyond repair.
I learned that it wasn’t just about the upholstery—it was about the people. My father’s work made homes warmer, more beautiful, and more comfortable, and that’s what made the long hours worth it.
Upholding Tradition, Embracing Growth
Taking the reins of Tina Upholstery hasn’t always been easy. There’s been pressure to keep up with the demands of modern trends while staying true to the traditional craftsmanship that defines our work. But I’ve always been committed to honoring the principles my father taught me. Every piece we create or restore carries the same level of care and attention to detail that Dad poured into the business from day one.
Under my leadership, Tina Upholstery has continued to grow. We now serve clients all across Australia, and our name is synonymous with quality and dedication. But even as we expand, I never forget where we started—my dad, fresh off the boat from Wales, in a small workshop, working his fingers to the bone to provide for his family and create something lasting.
Looking Ahead
I often reflect on the journey my father took—how he came to Australia with nothing and built a business that has stood the test of time. He didn’t just hand me a company; he handed me a legacy. A legacy of craftsmanship, of resilience, and of family.
I’m proud of where Tina Upholstery stands today, but more than that, I’m proud of the man who started it all. My father’s story is one of triumph over adversity, and I strive every day to make sure that his values live on in every piece of furniture that leaves our workshop.
While the world changes and business evolves, one thing remains constant: the heart of Tina Upholstery. It’s not just about the fabric or the frame—it’s about love, family, and the determination to create something beautiful that lasts. As I carry on my father’s legacy, I do so with pride and gratitude, knowing that I’m not just preserving a business but the spirit of a man who gave everything to make it thrive.
